The M5 is a family sedan that happens to be very fast, so it arrives with child seats and brake dust in equal measure. We flush the barrels with iron remover, correct the soft paint gently and coat it so the winter film rinses off. Inside, the stitched Merino leather and the Alcantara headliner get brushed and foamed rather than wiped, and the new plug-in hybrid gets its charge port cleaned without spraying water into it.

What we watch for on a M5

• The 2025 plug-in hybrid has a charge port door on the front fender that collects grit and water; we clean the flap and the port surround without spraying inside
• Twenty-inch and larger wheels with huge brakes bake brake dust into the barrels; an iron remover and a long-handled brush are required for a clean finish
• Touring models carry dogs and hockey bags, so the cargo carpet usually needs a shampoo and the plastic load sill is often scratched
• Frozen matte colours and the optional carbon-ceramic brakes each need specific care; no polish on matte paint, soft brushes on the gold calipers
• Merino leather with white or orange contrast stitching holds dirt in the thread, so we use a soft brush with a foaming cleaner before conditioning
