Cloth and vinyl soft tops brushed, cleaned, dried fully and sealed with a fabric or vinyl protectant. Rear windows and seals included.
A convertible roof is the one part of the car that is made of fabric and lives outside, and it shows neglect faster than paint. Cloth tops go dull and green in the seams and start soaking up rain instead of shedding it; vinyl tops chalk and crack. Auto Royale cleans and protects soft tops at your home anywhere in the GTA, with products chosen for the material and a drying step that most people skip.
Ontario's top-down season is short and the humidity is high, which is exactly the combination that grows mildew in a fabric roof that was put away damp. Getting the top clean and sealed in spring, and clean and dry before storage in fall, is most of the battle.
Most modern convertibles from Europe and Japan have a woven cloth top, often a polyacrylic or polyester canvas with a rubber inner layer. Older cars and many American convertibles have a vinyl top with a grain pressed into it. They look similar from a distance and need completely different care: a vinyl cleaner on cloth does little, and a fabric protectant on vinyl sits on top and smears. We confirm which you have before anything comes out of the van.
The top is brushed dry first with a soft horsehair brush to lift loose dust, pollen and dried bird droppings out of the weave. Then it is wetted with a low-pressure rinse, never a pressure washer at the seams, and a dedicated convertible top cleaner is worked in with the brush in overlapping strokes, with extra attention to the seams, the rear window surround and the folds. Green mildew in the seams gets a second pass and a longer dwell.
Rinsing matters more than the scrubbing. Cleaner left in the fabric attracts dirt and stops the protectant from bonding, so we flood rinse with a gentle flow until the water runs clear. On vinyl we use a vinyl cleaner and a softer brush, then dry with microfibre.
The top has to be completely dry before any protectant goes on, and in Lake Ontario humidity that can take a couple of hours even with towels and a blower. Then a fluoropolymer-based fabric protectant is sprayed in light, even coats with the paint and glass masked, because overspray on the clear coat is a nuisance to remove. Water beads off a properly sealed top for a full season, and dirt rinses off instead of settling in.
Vinyl tops get a water-based vinyl protectant with UV blockers and no silicone, which keeps the grain supple and matte rather than shiny and sticky.
Plastic rear windows on older tops scratch and yellow; we clean them with a plastic-safe cleaner and can polish light haze out with a plastic polish. Glass rear windows are cleaned normally, but we are careful around the defroster lines and the glued seam to the fabric. The rubber seals along the windows and the header are cleaned and treated with a rubber conditioner so they stay pliable and seal against rain. The frame bows and the well the top folds into are vacuumed and wiped, because leaves and grit collect there and abrade the fabric every time the top goes down.
Spring, before the first drive with the top down, is the obvious time. Late fall, before the car is covered or stored, is the one people forget, and a top that goes into storage dirty and damp comes out with mildew in April. We do this work in your driveway or garage, and we ask that the top stays up and dry for the rest of the day after the protectant goes on.
